Breast Cryoablation Treatment Available at Parkway Radiology

Parkway Radiology is pleased to introduce one of the most advanced and minimally invasive treatments for breast cancer available in Singapore: Breast Cryoablation. This procedure offers an effective and convenient option for breast cancer patients.

What is Breast Cryoablation?

Breast cryoablation is a minimally-invasive procedure that uses extreme cold to destroy cancerous tissues in the breast. By inserting a thin, needle-like cryoprobe into the tumor, liquid nitrogen or argon gas is delivered to freeze and ablate (destroy) the cancer cells. This method is particularly effective for small, localized tumors, providing a highly targeted treatment option.

Benefits of Breast Cryoablation

Minimally Invasive: Cryoablation requires no large incisions, resulting in less pain, minimal scarring, and quicker recovery compared to traditional surgery.

Quick Recovery: Patients typically experience a faster recovery time with fewer complications.

Targeted Treatment: Cryoablation is local therapy. The precision of cryoablation ensures that only the cancerous tissue is targeted, sparing healthy surrounding tissue.

Fewer Complications: With a lower risk of complications, cryoablation is a safer alternative for many breast cancer patients, especially those who may not be ideal candidates for surgery.

What to Expect

Before the Procedure: You will undergo imaging tests to determine the exact location and size of the tumor.

During the Procedure: Performed under deep conscious sedation, the "freeze" needle is guided into place using ultrasound or CT-fluoroscopy. Once in place, the needle is connected to the cryoablation machine which creates an "iceball" around the needle by freezing the surrounding tissue. The freeze-thaw cycles kill the tumour with which the iceball comes into contact. The procedure typically lasts about an hour, during which patient is awake and virtually free from pain.

After the Procedure: Most patients can resume normal activities within a few days. Follow-up imaging following the procedure will be required to evaluate for adequacy of the treatment.
